Giants sign former Eagles DE McDougle (AP)
The New York Giants shored up their defensive end position by signing former Philadelphia Eagles first-round pick Jerome McDougle. The Super Bowl champions lost seven-time Pro Bowler Michael Strahan to retirement in June and then had two-time Pro Bowler Osi Umenyiora sidelined with a season-ending knee injury a little more than a week ago in a game against the Jets.

QB Simms among cuts as Bucs trim to 53 (AP)
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released former starting quarterback Chris Simms on Saturday as they trimmed to the roster list of 53 players. Other notable cuts were linebacker Ryan Nece and receiver Michael Spurlock, who last season became the first player to return a kickoff for a touchdown in the Bucs’ 31-year history.

A hurricane has driven the Saints out of New Orleans again. They don’t plan on being gone nearly as long this time. With Hurricane Gustav bearing down on the Gulf Coast three years after Katrina swamped New Orleans, the Saints left Saturday for Indianapolis, where they will spend the week preparing for the Sept.

Jets RB Chatman gets 4-game steroid ban (AP)
Jets running back Jesse Chatman was suspended without pay by the NFL on Saturday for the team’s first four regular-season games for violating the league’s steroids and related-substances policy. Chatman, who signed with the Jets as a free agent in March, is eligible to rejoin the team Sept. 29, a day after New York’s game against Arizona.

Jaguars RB Taylor, ex-WR Smith arrested (AP)
Jacksonville’s career rushing and receiving leaders were arrested in a span of about five hours. Running back Fred Taylor was arrested outside a Miami Beach nightclub early Saturday and charged with disorderly conduct. Former receiver Jimmy Smith was arrested Friday night on a drunken driving charge in Jacksonville.
